The abstract world of proof-based mathematics is a perfect place to practice universal reasoning skills, and Euclidean geometry is an ideal introduction to mathematics as it is practiced by mathematicians. Based on Euclid's Elements, our geometry class will be a challenge for any student who is new to proof, but because it proceeds step by step from simple axioms, it is accessible to anyone who is willing to put in the necessary work. Facility with formula-based arithmetic and algebra is not necessarily an indicator of success in this class. Many students who have struggled with computation have found in proof-based geometry their first taste of mathematical success; students who have breezed through algebra have found geometry to be their first intense challenge. For all students, any time spent studying mathematical proof is time spent honing the art of clear thinking.
